La Vie has been my July 4th tradition for the past two years and i don't see that changing. they host this event called 'Diamonds in the Sky' on their penthouse terrace and the name is cheesy until you're actually there and the fireworks start going off over the Potomac and the water catches them and you understand completely. the view isn't a straight shot at the Mall — it's more riverfront, more water — but what you lose in angle you gain in ambiance ten times over. the food program is serious. they do a whole carving station, an open bar in the first hour, Mediterranean spreads everywhere. last year i went with my mom and two friends and we talked about it for weeks. book early. this thing sells out. it earns every penny.
